I’ve been practising karate for about 11 years now. I still remember being sat at the back of my brother’s class with a broken arm waiting until it was better to be able to join him. I had no idea I’d stay for a month, let alone be
teaching it ten years later, long after all my original training buddies had left.
I got my 3rd Dan in 2016 and started taking full classes soon after that, which, given that I could barely talk to people when I started, isn’t too bad.
Karate has given me more confidence, self-esteem and social skills than I could ever have dreamt of having when I was 10. To watch other people benefit from karate even half as much as I have is and will always be one of my favourite things. Okay my other
favourite thing may or may not be people openly not believing that I do karate because they think I’m too shy and quiet, or because I’m a girl. It’s fun to be underestimated sometimes.
I joined ATMA in May 2018 from a different organisation
and they’re the most progressive, inclusive and genuinely enjoyable association I’ve ever had the pleasure to be part of.
Outside of karate, I’m an illustrator and graphic designer, mostly making merch for pop punk bands. I volunteer
at my local Brownie group and I go to way more concerts than I should. I love football (when Leicester actually manage to play it) and go with my grandparents every weekend. I just graduated with an English degree (which would imply that writing this was easy
but apparently not). Without karate I couldn’t have done any of these things.
I hope you give karate a try, regardless of the things your mind tells you about yourself, you’re capable of anything and maybe karate is the thing you’ll
enjoy most, even if you only started it on a whim because you didn’t just want to sit and watch your brother do it anymore.
