Master Laura Drayton

Hi there, welcome to my page!

I’ve been training in Tang Soo Do now for a little over 16 years. I originally started as part of the Duke of Edinburgh scheme and my love of the art meant that I left D of E to do more karate! My passion eventually meant that I walked out of sixth Form at King Henry VIII, Coventry to teach full time. Many people thought at the time that I would regret my decision, but I can honestly say that I never have. Life should be about pursuing what you want to do, not about plodding along with what you feel you should do.  As well as teaching full time, I went to Henley College, Coventry to do a BTEC Level 3 in Sports and Exercise Science to supplement my teaching and I also have a BTEC Level 3 in Nutritional Therapy.

As  well as Tang Soo Do, I train in MMA (cage fighting) at UTC gym, Erdington. I have also fought with Sensei Dev Barrett and ECKA Coventry and trained under the Real Combat System with Matty Evans and Tony Somers. It has to be said, I’m immensely privileged to work with some truly amazing people!

The reason I love Martial Arts so much is, unlike a lot of sports, it is a deeply personal thing. It is about personal growth, personal development and learning that your dreams are always within your reach, but it must be you who chases them.

Other Hobbies

As well as Tang Soo Do and all the disciplines involved in MMA (grappling, wrestling, boxing, BJJ, kickboxing etc), I also do a fair bit of running. Currently, it’s mostly for weight maintenance, but I have run two marathons (Loch Ness and Dartmoor Vale), Hell in the Middle (part of the Hellrunner series) and I hope that my next event will be an ultra-marathon! I also do a few circuits in the week for extra conditioning.

Spare Time

What?? Ha ha ha!!! Whenever I get some free time, it’s mostly spent resting! I really love stand-up comedy. In the last few years, I’ve seen Jimmy Carr, Andrew Lawrence, Tommy Tiernan, Russell Howard and Kevin Bridges live. I’d like to see Lee Mack, Jack Dee and Sarah Millican at some point too. There’s nothing in this world as awesome as laughter!!!

I also love to travel. We have a world map up on the wall that we use to mark out  everywhere we’ve been. I’d like to see the whole world before I die…...I doubt I’ll get to see all of it, but it’s going to be a good life either way! Favourite place in the whole world is still Edinburgh-beautiful buildings, great restaurants, art galleries and such a dark, spooky history. Perfect at Halloween!

Book: Anything Harry Potter, anything by Sue Townsend or Jacqueline Wilson. My taste in books is extremely immature. The further it is from reality, the better!

Film: Not a massive movie geek because I can’t sit still long enough. I tend to watch the same movies over and over. I like my movies to be funny, or animated. Again, give me immaturity!!!

Song: If I was stuck on a desert island with only one song, it would be ‘Santana-Smooth’, but I would prefer to have the iPod with me just in case!

Meal: Baked sweet potato with tuna mayo and cheese, or turkey and bean curry with loads of chilli. This list could go on forever!

TV Show: Family Guy, Friends or South Park.

Hyung: Wanduan. Or Bassai. I like forms where slow and fast intermingle, the calm before the storm, learning to keep your body and mind under control, but knowing that sometimes, it’s ok to go crazy too.

Basic: Kicks!!! All kicks, any kicks, I don’t care, just let me kick!!!

If I had one piece of advice to give to the world:

Don’t settle for mediocrity. Do everything and anything that you want to do and do it as well as you can. Take every opportunity, make memories, be awesome. Life is short, cram in as much as you can. That way, when you look back at your life, you’ll be able to say, ‘Time well spent’!
